One project I have been working on that’s finished is a music video for Whitney Mann. She’s a good friend and a really talented musician who has opened for Willie Nelson, George Jones, and Loretta Lynn among many others. The song is called “Miss You on the Farm” and comes from her new EP The Western Sky.

This is the first of hopefully a few videos for the songs on the album and I can’t wait to work on the others. Many thanks to my friend and editor Sean Halvorsen for doing such a great job on the cut. (Find talented people that you really like to work with folks, it helps so, so, so much.)

My favorite part about going there was looking through those magazines. One day I came across the April 16, 1965 issue with the Larry Burrows “One Ride With Yankee Papa 13″ photo essay. It was one of the most powerful and fascinating things I had seen up to that point in my first 12 years. It remains so in my 35th year.

Besides the YP13 essay I began to study and seek out other essays and research the entire career of Burrows. His compilation book of his years in Vietnam is a great read and includes some of the most iconic images of the war.

Besides being a fan of his photography I’ve always thought that his life would make a great film. It would of course tell his interesting life story, but it would also be commenting on the nature of the war photographer and their need to capture the truth of the moments they see. From his days working in the London office of LIFE during the WWII blitz, to his untimely death covering the war in Vietnam, it would be a fascinating study of his character and work. Below is a clip of Burrows being interviewed during his years in Vietnam for just a sample of who he was personally. (It is taken from the beginning of the 1999 Patrick Chauvel film “Reporters de Guerre”.)

His son has since commented on the YP13 essay and gave this quote which appears on the LIFE site, “Everything associated with the number — the bad luck, the symbolism — he was aware of that. He made very conscious decisions. The number 13 was no accident.” I was thinking of this again today because LIFE has just published some never-before-seen photos from that Yankee Papa 13 series on-line, here’s the link:

I see her enthusiasm as we pack her crayons, bottles of glue, and watercolor paints and I think to myself “I hope it lasts.” I hope her excitement for learning lasts for her entire lifetime. And also that it doesn’t just start early – but stays with her as well. Because I discovered what it means to really study and learn MUCH later than I should have. And in hindsight of course that was a big mistake.

I hated going to school. HATED it. Yeah, yeah I know I teach at a college now so what’s the deal. Well here’s the deal. All I ever wanted as a kid was to find ways to avoid school, homework, book reports, all of it. I only wanted to do what I loved, which was:

1.) Watch TV and Movies (I can still tell you more about who was in what and when it was made than anyone I know.)

and

2.) Play with my toys. Specifically Legos. Even more specifically, space Legos.

Sure that may seem pretty normal, but I wish I had striven a bit to learn and take advantage of school a bit more. My teachers were fine, my classmates were great, I just didn’t want to sit still to be honest. It was the desk that bugged me the most. (Full disclosure, I still can’t sit at a desk too long. Luckily my chosen profession doesn’t require that.)

It did finally happen of course. That desire to learn I mean. For me it took going off to college. Actually going away to a school and relying only on me. It didn’t happen overnight and it certainly wasn’t smooth, but when I got ‘there’ my life changed so much for the better. I was able to (and for the first time wanted to) learn on my own. No teachers prodding me, no laziness on the task, I set my mind to it and studied what I needed or wanted to. And not just classes for my major but all of them. Gen Eds too. When I finally learned what it took to study it was never a chore anymore. Never. It was engaging and interesting and hell, actually fun.

That self-discipline and eagerness to learn allowed me to excel in the rest of my college career and throughout my professional career. I quickly got the jobs and projects I wanted because I studied and worked hard on them. I am now doing exactly what I want in life because of it and that is a treasure. So many people, including students I’ve worked with first hand, have yet to even think about what it means to really study. To see how all the classes, assignments, and other projects are not just about the answers they’re told to pursue. The answer is as much about the process itself.

And so is life right? As they say “the answers we seem to seek and look for in life aren’t a destination.” They really do tend to happen right under our noses. Like being there as your little girl goes off to school for the first time. To learn all these answers and truths for herself, one lesson at a time.

I just hope she can deal with sitting at a desk.

Everyday, for four years, I had been working on something for school. Sometimes entire days on multiple projects. And as the school I attended was 2 hours away from my home, the commute was no picnic. Dedication to the task was the most important asset. You have to have the perseverance to see it through when every little obstacle could be a reason to quit. You have to stay positive and leave nothing you could control to chance.

It meant alot for me to attempt and succeed at the goal I had set out for myself back in 2006 and learn all that I have. The program and instructors at DePaul are some of the best I’ve had and I can certainly say I made the right choice. They helped me as a student to already become a better teacher. I’ve used the great lessons I’ve learned there and applied them to my own style of teaching classes. I’ve also made some lifelong friends as well, and hope to keep working with them in the future.

That said, it’s time to take a quick breath and move on.

We at The CNS CO. are currently in negotiations on two fantastic novels which we’ll be adapting. One has a well-known director attached and would make for an exhilarating epic project set during WWII. The other is a thriller that we’ve had our eye on for years and feel now is the time to approach the author.

On the original screenplay front we are working mostly on 3 feature scripts; a comedy, a horror/comedy, and a science-fiction drama (the long developing project entitled “The Waves”.) Our goal is to develop and finance and/or sell one or more of these projects in the upcoming months. We’ll hopefully still make the occasional short – but as we move into this bigger writing and producing market, while moving towards our larger goals, the time just won’t be there too often.

As for other things, I am still teaching and truly enjoy it. The mentoring is my favorite part and in a lot of ways I think it’s the most important part.

It’s like being a coach. Every year you get a team of players with varying levels of talent, desire, and ability. You teach the fundamentals to all and that will help most players get better, but they have to have self-initiative to do so. Some are too immature or lazy to actually work at it, and they never progress. (This happens all too often.) Some players will come to you with very little or no talent, but they tend to have a strong desire to make it, so they work really hard and they get much better. And sometimes, on those rare occasions, you just get someone who has that natural ability and talent to be great. And you realize you can help them develop that correctly through mentoring and instruction so they achieve their great potential. I have seen this only a handful of times, but it means quite a bit when they actually reach those heights they deserve.

So keep checking back as we move on with these new projects. It’s fun to be at this level right now and I can’t wait to see what happens in the near future as we continue to move “ever up and onward.”

So now we’ll be designing and creating the DVDs for cast and crew, and just after that we’ll start submitting it to fests worldwide. This was the biggest thing we’ve done to date and are, as always, hoping for the best as far as getting into some great festivals.

‘For All Mankind’, ‘Starman’, ‘Blade Runner’, ‘Chariots of Fire’, and ‘The Last Wave’. All of these projects have lush, hypnotic scores that really complement each film. And I love them all.

Whenever I begin writing or working on a film I always put a playlist together of music that inspires me, especially for specific scenes. The playlist for CROSSING THE LAKE is full of various ambient and progressive rock like Brian Eno, Vangelis, and Genesis, as well as some Roger Miller, Whitney Mann, and Jenny Lewis. I know it seems an awkward mix, but there are elements within each that are very complementary. They just work really, really well for me together.

Whitney Mann is a friend and agreed from the start to provide a song for a very pivotal scene towards the middle of the film. (You can check some of her music out here.) But as we got into the production I was having very little luck finding a composer who had the right sound for that ambient/progressive score I wanted throughout the film.

That was until I recently discovered Ray Lynch.

Ray is an immensely talented musician and he has just agreed to provide the musical score for CROSSING THE LAKE. I could not be happier about this! His music is currently featured on the FOX SEARCHLIGHT website for the film GENTLEMAN BRONCOS and in the game Grand Theft Auto IV. He has been a composer for over 20 years and you can read and listen to more from him on his website. You can also purchase his music on iTunes here.

Having Ray and Whitney on board for the music really helps us get much closer to our final cut of the film. Their music will fully develop our story and round out the musical elements I’ve been hoping would come into play for this film. (They bring some real talent to the table people, and we will gladly use it.)

We’re very lucky to have them both on this. Very lucky.

Lots of progress on the new film. About 65% ready to go. Just made a final look at the casting and had a great road trip to lock down most of the Michigan locations, including the beach above for our opening 1980′s scene. It’s perfect. Also locked in the working yellow submarine which plays a pivotal role.

The owner is one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met and is maybe as excited as I am to see this all happen. Everything else is lining up nice and should be just fine. (We shoot in about 6 weeks.)

This is adding up to the biggest thing we’ve ever done. Which is very cool. Some even bigger stuff is in the works too. But all in good time.

The new film tells the tale of Patrick Turkel, a thirty-something store clerk who decides to breakaway from his rather dull and unfulfilling life. In order to do this he decides to follow through on a long-forming but risky idea in order to overcome his personal fears and change the course of his life for the better.

And if he fails, well he’s probably gonna die.
